Activity based Lifestyle: My Projects on Health and Health Professions

Away from too much Carbs!

Reading the news, AFP reports Australian scientists had discovered that by altering or manipulating fat cells in mice, they were able to increase their general metabolism. This is good news for those who are constantly battling dieting problems. Imagine eating as much as you can and your body using all the food as fast as it an. No need for more exercise. They better start working more on that 'fat cell manipulation'.

So here is a sample dinner for me, chicken

In Chicago, AP reports that an eleven year study conducted on women with an average age of 54 years found that obesity whether fit or not, contribute to heart disease later in life. What this means is that, no matter how much you exercise, you are still susceptible to heart related ailments if you were obese. The best way to combat this problem: Lose weight and exercise.

Cut cauliflower
I grabbed a bag of cauliflower.

In my case, I am still working on substituting whole wheat/grain bread for the refined carbs(rice) my body's used to taking. Today I consumed two slices of whole bread and cheese and chicken leg for breakfast, one cut of chicken breast, 2 cups of vegetables and a bowl of potato soup for lunch, some meat, 2 cups of rice and three slices of whole wheat bread for dinner. I finished it all with decaf coffee. I feel fine so far.

I haven't been working out because of some rib pain after a PT co-worker wrestled me last Friday -- gee, he just loves doing a full Nelson on me and lifting me up in the air, how many times I need to remind him I am too old for these stupid moves. Ah, does he listen? No!

Anyway, it's been three days now and the pain is easing a little bit already. Hopefully I could resume running by the end of the week. No more hugging for me from now on.

On the topic of white rice, here are some thoughts from a book entitled : Dr. Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease --

(gist) when you eat too much sweet and too much refined carbs like white rice, your body tends to produce more insulin to maintain the sugar level of blood to normal. But this has a corollary effect that's dangerous to the body. Too much insulin into the blood stream stimulates the secretion of lipoprotein lipase, an enzyme the increases the uptake of fat from your bloodstream into fat in your body's cells. Therefore, increased carbs/sugar means increased insulin. Increased insulin means increased lipoprotein lipase. Increased lipase means increased fat uptake of the body cell. Which means, obesity.

Whole wheat instead of processed rice
It may look dry and ugly but it wasn't that bad at all.

Insulin also stimulates a liver enzyme, HMG-CoA reductase that causes your liver to make more cholesterol. Therefore increased sugar = increased insulin = increased fat in cells = increased production of cholesterol by the liver.

It's not over yet! Increased insulin also affects the arterial smooth muscle cells which, in turn, may help clog up your arteries. The result of all these?

Heart Disease.

I am not saying that everybody should avoid carbohydrates like the plague now. If your job is physical and you sweat the whole day, or you run marathons, carbohydrates (the right ones) are necessary for your body. People need carbs - it's the gasoline of the body - but like any car, you don't over-fill your tank. Better yet, you can choose the correct carbohydrates (known for their high glycemic index) and alongside this, increase the amount of proteins and fibers. It is really a matter of educating oneself about health that we become healthy. People should not just limit themselves to one staple food. We need to increase our variety of food.
